The NBA announced it renamed its Most Valuable Player award after Michael Jordan.
On Tuesday morning, the league revealed that the award would be called the Michael Jordan Trophy in honor of the Chicago Bulls Hall of Famer.

“Our new collection of trophies celebrates some of the greatest and most impactful players in the history of the NBA,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “As we recognize the league’s top performers each season, we also pay tribute to the legends who embody these prestigious awards.”
The new bronze trophy, which was designed by Mark Smith, the retired vice president of innovation special projects at Nike, was also unveiled. It features a player emerging from a rock as he reaches for a crystal basketball, symbolizing an athlete’s progression of accomplishment in the league.
Jordan received the NBA’s MVP award five times during his career, earning it in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 1998 with the Bulls. He also won six NBA championships with the Chicago franchise. Jordan was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009.

The trophy is among five other rebranded awards the league unveiled Tuesday. Included among them is the Jerry West Trophy for NBA Clutch Player of the Year.
