Trump wants a full GOP surrender on abortion

Returning to his roots as a lifelong Democrat, former President Donald Trump is now calling for the Republican Party to completely and totally surrender on the issue of abortion.
Trump declared in an interview with NBC that heartbeat laws are a “terrible thing.” Those are laws for which pro-life activists and politicians have been fighting for decades, banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, when unborn babies have a heartbeat. There is no cold political logic to it either, given that GOP governors in Florida, Georgia, and Ohio who signed those laws easily won their reelection campaigns. Trump simply thinks protecting unborn children is a “terrible thing.”

If you don’t believe that, or think that it is uncharitable, you need only listen to Trump’s grand “solution” on abortion. Here is what Trump proposed: “I would sit down with both sides and I would negotiate something and we’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”
You would have to be absolutely delusional to believe that. Senate Democrats tanked a 20-week abortion ban in 2018 and even shot down an attempt to provide protections for babies born alive after failed abortions in 2020. It is the mainstream position of Democratic politicians that there should be no restrictions on abortion at all. They are not going to compromise on abortion, an issue they claim is about nothing more than Republicans trying to “control women’s bodies.”
There is no compromise to be had. There is no hypothetical here you can even pose to try and give Trump some benefit of the doubt. Trump is trashing Republicans for successfully protecting unborn children because he thinks he can make Democrats happy on the issue, when the only thing they will accept is no abortion restrictions anywhere for any reason.

Even worse, Trump is stomping all over his biggest accomplishment: appointing justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. The entire point of overturning Roe was to allow GOP-run states to impose abortion restrictions, after the court imposed an arbitrary limit on abortion bans while giving Democrats free rein to pursue legal abortion up to birth. Now, Trump wants to effectively reimpose Roe’s standards because he thinks Democrats will work with him to restrict abortion.
What Trump is claiming he will achieve is nothing more than a full surrender to the Democratic Party on abortion. It is cowardly, it is politically ignorant, and it is delusional. It is a kick to the teeth of the pro-life movement and the work it has put in over the last decades, as well as to any Republicans who actually care about protecting unborn children from the abortion industry. Yet Trump is boasting about it all the same.
