No more tax dollars for the American Library Association

There is a battle raging for the hearts and minds of your children. One side wants them to read the same classics you were raised on, which celebrate marriage and family as the foundation of civil society.

On the other side are Marxist feminists, some of whom have written books calling for the end of the nuclear family, who want to expose your children to graphic sexual content that teaches them there are infinite genders and definitions of family and that any effort to promote one type over another is a tool of white supremacy.

One side, the revolutionary side, is funded by your tax dollars, and this needs to stop.

The American Library Association was founded “to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all,” but it is now headed by a self-described Marxist feminist who rejects “gender as a binary system” and wants to use a “set of tools” from the association to fight “climate change, class war, white supremacy, and imperialism.”

One can tell how the association wants to change the world by whom it honors and tries to erase. In 2018, it voted to remove Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the beloved Little House on the Prairie children’s books, from its major children’s literature award because the author’s legacy “may no longer be consistent with the intention of the award named for her.”

Instead, in 2020, the association gave the book Gender Queer its Alex Award, which goes to those with “special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.” Unlike Little House on the Prairie, which promotes wholesome frontier life, Gender Queer is a comic book featuring graphic depictions of gay sex and promoting irreversible surgeries to complete gender transformations.

The pictures in Gender Queer are so obscene that a local television station in Florida had to cut its feed when Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) showed parts of the book at a press conference.

The association’s far-left anti-family agenda is mostly funded by members’ dues, including city, county, and state libraries. Almost all of these are paid for by tax dollars. So, this far-left agenda is being funded by taxpayers. The association has also received many grants for educational outreach from the federal government.

Missouri, Montana, and Texas have cut ties with the association, as have many county libraries.

All libraries have limited resources and must choose which books to carry and which to promote and reward, especially for children.

If San Francisco wants to make sure every 12-year-old who enters a public library is encouraged to read Gender Queer, that is the city’s decision. For related reasons, San Francisco has a rapidly declining population of children anyway. But communities with values different from San Francisco should be allowed to stock their libraries with books they think fit and should not send any money to the American Library Association.
