WATCH LIVE: United Auto Workers announces decision on strike following contract negotiations

The United Auto Workers will announce its decision on whether to strike on Thursday night following weeks of contract negotiations with Detroit‘s three automakers.
UAW President Shawn Fain said the final decision on which plants will strike will not be announced until 10 p.m. He said it is possible that all 146,000 UAW members could decide to walk out, but the union will begin striking at a limited number of plants.

The union is engaged in contract negotiations with Detroit’s three automakers: General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. UAW is demanding a 36% boost in pay and the automakers have countered with offers that are roughly half of that increase.
The potential strike will be a test of President Joe Biden’s assertion that he is the most pro-union president in U.S. history, as well as offer a projection as to who the unions will endorse in 2024.

UAW endorsed Biden in 2020, but Fain said the union was withholding its endorsement until the president addresses certain concerns, including the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles.
The UAW’s announcement of the impending strike will begin at 10 p.m. on Thursday night.
