With less than a month to spare, David Weiss indicts Hunter Biden on his gun crime

At long last, nearly five years since lying on his application to purchase a Colt Cobra illegally, Hunter Biden has been indicted.

To view the sunny side of the situation, consider that the first son committed the gun crime in question “on or about” Oct. 12, 2018. Consider that the statute of limitations for such a prosecution is five years exactly, meaning special counsel David Weiss had less than a month to spare before the clock ran out.

On the other hand, the entire executive branch has seemingly succeeded in letting the clock run out regarding every other one of the younger Biden’s crimes. Multiple whistleblowers from the FBI and IRS have testified on the record to the House Judiciary Committee that Biden appointees refused to assist in the tax crimes investigation before Weiss was appointed special counsel. Prosecutors in Washington, D.C., and California refused to cooperate with Weiss, letting the statute of limitations for a number of the tax provisions expire. Hence, Weiss’s new indictment does not charge Biden with the tax crimes he almost certainly committed.

And it’s not as though Weiss is innocent, either. Consider that he has been in charge of the Biden investigation since 2018. Only after House Republicans and right-leaning media dragged the ugly truth, kicking and screaming, into the sunlight did Weiss finally indict Biden with a single crime that conveniently does not implicate the president.

And what about Biden’s overseas influence peddling and deal brokering with oligarchs from America’s avowed enemies? Well, like tax crimes, crimes relating to failure to register as a foreign agent also have a five-year statute of limitations. Biden stepped down from his now-infamous post on the board of Burisma in April 2018.

Or, exactly five years and five months ago.

While we can celebrate that Biden will finally face his day in court for one crime, let us not forget that all the rest can only be adjudicated in the court of Congress’s impeachment inquiry, not an actual court of law.
