Glenn Youngkin sets date for special election to replace the late Don McEachin

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) has scheduled the special election to replace late-Rep. Donald McEachin (D-VA) for Feb. 21.
McEachin died at the age of 61 after a lengthy battle with cancer, with dozens of lawmakers attending his funeral last Wednesday.

Two Richmond-area Democrats, Del. Lamont Bagby and state Sen. Jennifer L. McClellan, both of whom are members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, have filed to run for the position. Candidates must file to run by Dec. 23.
McClellan won McEachin’s state Senate seat after the Virginia Democrat came to Congress.
Former Del. Joseph Preston, a Democrat, has also launched a bid.
Virginia’s 4th Congressional District is rated a D+10 by nonpartisan political handicapper Cook Political Report and is likely to remain in Democrats’ control.

McEachin came to Congress in 2016 after serving in the state legislature, first in the House of Delegates and then the state Senate. He was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2013 but began facing further complications in 2018.
It’s unclear whether Democrats will hold a primary or primary convention to determine who will be the party’s candidate.
