Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has admitted that he made many mistakes during the pandemic but claimed that they were only visible in “hindsight.” That is only true if you stuck your head in the sand, as Newsom did for the duration of the pandemic all the way up to his weak attempt to distance himself from his own failures.

When confronted with the fact that he allowed Hollywood to operate while banning people from going to church or attending funerals with their loved ones, Newsom claimed that “we didn’t know what we didn’t know,” asserting that everyone was as wrong as he was and that we’re all just “experts in hindsight.”

FANI WILLIS BANKROLLS PRIVATE ATTORNEY FOR TRUMP PROSECUTION: ‘CERTAINLY UNORTHODOX’

This is nonsense. Everyone knew that exemptions for Hollywood while churches, funerals, schools, and other businesses were restricted was hypocritical and had nothing to do with science. Newsom deemed television shows and movies as “critical infrastructure” in California to give them special breaks during the pandemic. No one needed “hindsight” at the time to notice the double standard there.

That is true in just about every area of California’s terrible pandemic response. It was clear by the fall 2020 semester that children were not at serious risk from COVID and that in-person schooling needed to resume immediately. Several states ensured exactly that, and yet California kept schools closed longer than everyone. Apparently, hindsight arrived a little late in the Golden State.

Everyone can see that Newsom’s weak attempt at deflection here is nonsense based on his own actions. He sent his children to a private school that allowed in-person learning while public schools up and down the state were forced to close. He sent his children to a summer camp in 2021 that was violating state policy by not forcing children to be masked, only pulling them out after that fact became public. In-person learning and mask-free summer activities were good for Newsom’s children, but not yours.

And, of course, Newsom dined indoors with several other people in violation of his own COVID emergency order that he expected other people to follow in order to enjoy upscale French cuisine alongside lobbyists. This is the man arrogantly trying to dodge criticism by claiming that we are all “experts in hindsight.”

Newsom’s policies were frequently wrong during the pandemic, whether that be special privileges for Hollywood that were not afforded to other businesses or the inexcusable two-year-long torment of children with school restrictions. He does not get to claim now that we just “didn’t know,” when so many people did know what he was doing was wrong, especially when Newsom regularly violated his own orders for the benefit of him and his family.
