Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele has asked people to speak out against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, saying she “almost” feels like “we’re gonna have blood on our hands.”

Steele’s statement was made in response to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre saying that biological men competing in women’s sports was a “complicated issue with a wide range of views.” Steele argued the debate was not complicated and that the “vast majority of Americans agree” that having biological men compete in women’s sports is “ridiculous.”

“And I’m disappointed in a lot of people, a lot of companies, etc. They were preaching and supporting women’s sports, etc., and how that Title IX worked for all these years, and then, all of a sudden, we’re just forgetting it and ignoring it?” Steele said on Thursday. “And most importantly, people who agree with us that are being silent. Why? Because it’s easier, because it’s safer. And I just feel that if we don’t speak up — and, by the way, I mean men and athletes with big platforms as well — I almost feel like we’re gonna have blood on our hands here because what is the line?”

Steele warned that if people fail to speak up, the United States will have wasted “50 years of work in trying to uplift women.” She also added it was “pathetic” the issue remains and suggested people in leadership who fail to give “an honest answer” should be ashamed.

Steele left ESPN in mid-August following a suspension she received at the network in October 2021 over comments she made on former President Barack Obama and the COVID-19 vaccine. On social media, she stated she left to “exercise my First Amendment rights more freely.” During Thursday’s interview, she stated leaving ESPN was not how she “dreamed” of it ending.

“And you know what?” Steele said. “It wasn’t meant to be, and I do believe God always has a plan, and I’m trying to figure out the plan now. But I feel like I’m right where I am supposed to be, even though it’s a little uncomfortable because it took a long time to get to the point where I was OK standing up for myself.”

In an interview earlier this month, Steele said she was upset that other co-workers had different rules they could abide by while she was treated differently based on political views.

In June 2023, Steele was offered $501,000, as well as money to cover “reasonable” attorney fees, to settle her lawsuit, according to Front Office Sports.
