Stimulus update: Montana residents can apply for tax rebate worth up to $675

Montana residents have more than a month left to apply for property tax rebates of up to $675 for eligible taxpayers in the Treasure State.
Residents have until Oct. 1 to apply for the rebate via an online portal that opened last week. Eligible Montanans can claim their rebates via the online portal or with a paper form.

The rebate amount for each taxpayer depends on how much an individual paid in property taxes for their “principal Montana residence,” and there is a maximum of $675 for the rebate. In addition, the state is only allowing one rebate per household.
In order to be eligible for the rebate, a Montana taxpayer must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months. They must also have been being billed and paying for the property taxes on the residence.
“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement in July.

Within 30 days of filing an application online or up to 90 days after filing a paper application, a resident will receive their tax rebate.
The state says an identical rebate will be available to Montana residents in 2024 based on tax year 2023. The rebate being sent out this year is based on tax year 2022.
