Long sought sexual assault measures in Michigan first introduced in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal will soon be implemented after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Thursday, June 29, 2023. The package will create stricter punishments for sexual assault under the guise of medical treatment and protect students who report it. It will also require the creation and distribution of comprehensive training materials for people required to report suspected child abuse and neglect. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File) Alex Brandon/AP

Democrats keep begging red state residents to move to dying blue states

Democratic governors and mayors cling to their arrogant sense of superiority even as they continue to beg people to move out of red states and into their dying states and cities.

Michigan has targeted ads at residents of Florida, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, bragging about Michigan’s abortion laws and how “we’re a state that’s on the right side of history.” According to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), “People want to create homes in places where they know that their leaders and laws align with their values.”

If that’s the case, Whitmer may want to reevaluate Michigan and its Democratic values. Michigan’s 2022 population growth rate was negative 0.03%, good for 34th nationally and ahead of none of the states the ad campaign is targeting. Florida ranks first with a growth rate of 1.87% and South Carolina third at 1.69%. The worst of those six states was Indiana, which still had a positive growth rate and ranks 23rd among all states.

What’s more, Michigan ranks just 45th in population growth since 2010. Texas, Florida, and South Carolina all rank in the top 10. Georgia ranks 14th and Tennessee 17th. Again, Indiana is the worst of the group and still ranks 27th, 18 spots higher than Michigan. Whitmer and Michigan trying to challenge these states and lobby for people to move out is equivalent to a featherweight boxer trying to call out heavyweights for a fight. It’s laughable at best.

Whitmer isn’t alone in this endeavor. Both New York City and California have also been begging people to move in with ad campaigns targeting Florida residents. Florida is the fastest-growing state in the country, while California’s growth projections have collapsed as people moved out, and New York City has lost nearly half a million people (mostly to Southern states) since 2020.

This is the trend into which Democratic cities and states are falling as their terrible governance scares off their own populations while GOP-run states prosper. Whitmer and Michigan can brag about the “right side of history” and how much they love being able to kill unborn children all they want, but people vote with their feet. Michigan is mediocre at best when it comes to population growth, and the states it is begging people to leave are among the ones that have been growing the most during the past decade.

As it turns out, abortion laws or laws preventing doctors from disfiguring gender-confused children are not deal breakers for most people. They want states that provide economic opportunities and safety and won’t tax and regulate them out of their jobs, lifestyles, or the American dream. Like California and New York City, Michigan is failing in that category. Perhaps Whitmer should focus on that before begging people to move up north.
