Is Pamela Price already the worst district attorney in the country?

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price has only been on the job for half a year, but she may have already surpassed every challenger to become the worst district attorney in the country.

On top of her flagrant disregard for the safety of Alameda County, which includes crime-ridden Oakland, California, Price now finds herself in a nepotism scandal. Price hired her boyfriend to her office on a six-figure salary, with county officials saying they haven’t found any documents showing that Price notified them about it.

Price’s boyfriend, Antwon Cloird, does not exactly have a squeaky-clean reputation, either. Cloird was investigated by the FBI around 2015, with Richmond, California’s mayor, city manager, and police chief suspecting him of shaking down companies as a “connected nonprofit executive.” Cloird was not charged.

Even then, the best-case scenario is that Price hired her boyfriend to her office for a job that pays over $115,000 a year. Even worse, his role is to “identify candidates for early release and assess their readiness to join society,” according to the Mercury News. That means that Price, who has an atrocious track record when it comes to putting and keeping violent criminals in jail, is paying her boyfriend six figures to find criminals to put back out on the street.

Among the prominent examples of Price’s pro-criminal policies include her promise to find a “non-carceral” form of “accountability” for gang members who shot and killed a toddler during a rolling gun battle. She refused to try a 17-year-old as an adult despite the fact that he directly participated in three murders. At a broader level, crime in Oakland has grown so catastrophic that women do not feel safe, the NAACP has called her out and demanded a state of emergency be called, and police have resorted to telling residents to carry air horns and bar their doors and windows.

All the while, Price insists that her policies of giving violent criminals the lightest possible sentences, resulting in them serving short sentences behind bars or having no jail time at all, have no effect on crime. How could letting violent career criminals back onto the street lead to an increase in violent crime? How could showing criminals that you will not even attempt to give them jail time lead to them becoming emboldened? Price just doesn’t understand how that could be possible.

It is that stunning ignorance of basic human nature that makes Price and other “reform prosecutors” such failures. The rapid decay in public safety in Oakland, along with a nepotism scandal rising to the surface in just a few short months, might make Price the worst district attorney in the country, and she has 3 1/2 years left in her term.
