Biden, Obama rally to push Fetterman, Shapiro across the finish line in PA

President Joe Biden and his onetime boss, former President Barack Obama, appeared at a campaign rally Saturday for Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D-PA) and Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D-PA) in hopes of helping them win their respective Senate and gubernatorial races.
Shapiro leads Republican state Senate leader Doug Mastriano by more than 10 percentage points, but Fetterman is in a very close race against Republican senatorial candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. Roughly 7,500 people were in attendance, according to the White House.

Biden spoke first, and his remarks largely mirrored the stump speech he has delivered since August. He touted his legislative wins and attacked Republicans, including Oz and Mastriano, for threatening to roll back the economic progress the United States has seen since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I know Pennsylvania well, and John Fetterman is Pennsylvania. He is Pennsylvania. And Oz ain’t Pennsylvania,” Biden joked. “Look, I lived in Pennsylvania longer than Oz has lived in Pennsylvania, and I moved away when I was 10 years old.”
Biden specifically told the crowd that “character” would be on the ballot when votes are cast on Tuesday.
“Folks, I want to be very clear, and I mean this sincerely about what’s on the ballot this year,” Biden told the crowd. “Your right to choose is on the ballot. Your right to vote is on the ballot. Social Security, Medicare are on the ballot.”
He continued, “Something else is on the ballot. Character. Character’s on the ballot.”
Obama, who appeared at a rally with Fetterman earlier in the day, closed out the rally and mainly focused on the importance of voting in midterm elections, even going so far as recounting when he “got [his] butt whooped in a midterm election.”
The former president proceeded to laud Biden’s two years in office while having the thinnest possible majority in the Senate.
“The good news is, you have an outstanding president right now in the White House,” Obama said. “He’s doing stuff right now. Solving problems right now with a Democratic Congress, and he can continue it if you vote.”
“If you help Democrats keep the house and get a few more seats in the Senate. You can guarantee he’ll make more progress on the issues you care about,” he continued. “You’ve seen what he’s accomplished with the barest of margins. If you vote, he can do even more, but it depends on you.”
