Elon Musk’s X fined $350,000 in DOJ feud over Trump records

The company formally known as Twitter was fined $350,000 for failing to immediately comply with a Justice Department search warrant for records related to former President Donald Trump‘s account despite eventual compliance.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit declined an objection by Elon Musk‘s social media platform to an order that disallowed the company from informing anyone about the warrant, according to a court opinion unsealed on Wednesday.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who has been investigating the former president in a two-pronged case since late last year, obtained a search warrant in January for records related to Trump’s account. The fine was levied for delaying compliance, according to court records obtained by the Washington Examiner.
The details were included in the decision from the federal appeals court that rejected the tech company’s claim that a lower court judge was wrong to hold the company in contempt and impose the sanction.

The court “found probable cause to search the Twitter account for evidence of criminal offenses,” according to the filing.
