Are Democrats and their ‘sanctuary cities’ ready to secure the border yet?

Sanctuary” states and cities continue to crumble under the weight of the border crisis, to the point that their officials are practically begging Democrats in Washington, D.C., to do something.

Massachusetts has now declared a state of emergency after placing more than 20,000 illegal immigrants in the state’s shelter system. Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) cited the “rapid and unabating increases in the number of families with children and pregnant people” arriving in Massachusetts, a state with eight sanctuary cities that can’t handle a fraction of the illegal immigration that border towns and states have been dealing with for years.

CRIMINALS NEED TO BE LOCKED UP

At the same time, Chicago is asking for more federal funding to deal with the illegal immigrants that the sanctuary city invited to the country but evidently didn’t want to have to deal with itself. Chicago officials are refusing to disclose how the city has spent $120 million on illegal immigrant arrivals, even ignoring multiple inquiries from the Illinois attorney general. Chicago has received about 12,000 illegal immigrants since last year and is receiving 40-50 of them per day from Texas, a laughable fraction of what Texas and its border towns see every day.

New York City has also recently received $104 million in federal funds, to the chagrin of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ). New York City has received nearly 100,000 illegal immigrants. Arizona is seeing an average of 1,300 arrivals per day, which means New York City’s one year being forced to live up to its sanctuary label is the equivalent of what Arizona sees in 2 1/2 months. Oh, and Mayor Eric Adams wants even more money from the federal government because, well, of course he does.

The common throughline with all three of these liberal sanctuaries is that they all used their sanctuary status to shame border towns and border states for not being accepting of illegal immigrants. They gave themselves the label because they wanted to flaunt their moral superiority. Then they were all forced to deal with, again, just a fraction of what towns in Texas and Arizona had for years. Suddenly, all of these sanctuaries are declaring the situation to be an emergency.

That is what Republicans and border states have been trying to make clear for years now. The southern border is porous, and the refusal by Democrats in Congress and the White House to secure it strains the resources of those being forced to deal with it. Each sanctuary city that whines about having to live up to its sanctimonious label simply confirms that. The border crisis is indeed a crisis. As has been the case for years, everyone is still waiting for Democrats in Washington, D.C., to address it.
