Los Angeles doesn’t want to prosecute criminals if they are illegal immigrants

What happens when you prioritize letting criminals out of jail and mix that with extreme support for sanctuary city policies?
You end up with Los Angeles, which now plans to let criminals off the hook if they also happen to be in the country illegally.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon has instructed prosecutors to now consider immigration status when it comes to charging criminals with crimes. According to the policy, “All charging determinations shall be undertaken with the goal of avoiding or mitigating the adverse immigration consequences of a decision.”

The policy even encourages people under criminal investigation to contact Gascon’s office and “present information concerning adverse immigration consequences” before charges are handed down so he can give them a slap on the wrist instead.
Normally, all charging determinations would be undertaken with the goal of seeking justice and making sure dangerous criminals can no longer threaten a community, but that is not how Gascon rolls. Gascon has made it his priority to make sure criminals are released onto the street as quickly as possible, and now he wants to make sure that illegal immigrants who commit crimes face no real consequences for their actions. Gascon doesn’t want criminals behind bars or deported to their home countries. He wants them out on the streets in Los Angeles to continue to terrorize residents and businesses as they please.
Unsurprisingly, Gascon’s reign has seen crime continue to spiral out of control in Los Angeles. Compared to 2020, homicides in 2022 are up 14%, robbery is up 16%, aggravated assaults are up 10%, grand theft auto is up 23%, and shooting victims are up 12%. Hate crimes targeting black people have risen from 380 in 2020 to 596 in 2021 to 620 this year with one month still to go, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
But Gascon has his biggest priority under control: Arrests are down 10% compared to 2020. How is that for justice?
In electing Gascon, Los Angeles has chosen to let criminals set the terms for living in the city. This is simply the next predictable step for a sanctuary city that has already disregarded crime as a concern. Gascon may only be a few months away from just handing out Monopoly “get out of jail free” cards to criminals in the city, yet Los Angeles residents still haven’t hit their breaking point.
