Voters want both parties to dump their old men

Voters are practically begging Democrats and Republicans not to nominate the unpopular old men they nominated in 2020. The party that finally relents and runs someone else will be the one that benefits most.

A New York Times-Siena College poll has President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump tied with 43% each. Trump’s unpopularity is clear: His favorability is 14 points underwater, 51% of people think he committed “serious federal crimes,” and 53% think his actions after the 2020 election “threatened American democracy.” Of course, his unpopularity was clear in November 2020, when he managed to lose the presidency to Biden.

JACK SMITH’S DANGEROUS CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT

Biden is not in a much better position. He is tied with Trump despite a majority of people thinking Trump committed serious federal crimes and threatened democracy. His favorability is 11 points underwater, and his approval rating is 15 points underwater. Just 20% of people think the economy is excellent or good, with 78% saying it is “only fair” or poor. Half of Democrats want a new nominee in 2024.

A Biden-Trump rematch is nothing more than a race to the bottom. They are both known commodities, and the one thing voters know about both of them is that they think they are both terrible. Trump is old, erratic, self-sabotaging, probably criminal, and selfish. Biden is old, incoherent, a fraud, probably criminal, and old. Voters are ready to move on.

Democrats are not. They have fully embraced 80-year-old Biden in much the opposite way that Biden has embraced the 4-year-old granddaughter he has denied the existence of. They think Biden is popular, the economy is great, and voters are simply dumb or brainwashed if they don’t understand that. Sure, he barely beat Trump in 2020 and has only racked up a terrible record since then, but surely he is invincible, right?

Republicans could make just as dumb of a decision by nominating the only candidate who is as old as Biden and lost to Biden already. Trump couldn’t beat Biden in a debate or in swing states. He would be relying on a hope and a prayer, and that is not good enough.

It would almost be as easy as putting a younger, coherent candidate on the debate stage opposite the washed-up 2020 nominees for one party to win. If Trump couldn’t out-debate Biden, how would he out-debate Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA)? Picture for a second Biden trying to discuss the weather with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), let alone the complex political issues that candidates must debate. Persuadable voters aren’t even asking to be persuaded. They just want anyone else.

Democrats have dug their hole and seem content to lie in it. Republicans have the opportunity to capitalize by contrasting a younger, competent candidate against the ancient, unpopular president. They should offer voters that new path before Democrats come to their senses and do the same because the one who gets their first will be rewarded for it.
