Chris Christie suggests Trump sell New York property to cover legal fees

2024 presidential candidate Chris Christie suggested former President Donald Trump sell one of his assets, namely Trump Tower, to cover his legal fees instead of using campaign donations.
Trump has racked in over $53 million since the start of the year amid multiple criminal charges. His PAC, Save America, reported spending over $21 million on legal expenses to the Federal Election Commission on Monday. Trump’s defense bill expenditures amount to around two-thirds of the overall spending during that period.

“The fact is, when you look at just his campaign filings yesterday, almost most of the money that middle-class Americans have given to him, he spent on his own legal fees,” Christie said on CNBC’s Squawk Box on Tuesday.

Christie attacked Trump for taking small donations from his supporters despite his billionaire status, telling the former president to sell Trump Tower or one of his planes or golf courses to pay those fees.
“But instead, he’s taking $25, $50, $100 from everyday Americans who believe they’re giving it to him to help elect him president. And he’s paying his legal fees,” Christie said.
Trump’s PAC has faced staggering costs this year, which resulted in it requesting a refund on a $60 million contribution made to the GOP front-runner, sources familiar with the matter said, according to a Saturday New York Times report.
“One of the most astonishing ones yesterday was $108,000 for Melania’s stylist,” Christie said, adding the expense was reported as “political strategy consulting.”

The super PAC paid monthly installments to the former first lady’s fashion designer of several years, Herve Pierre Braillard, who has worked with high-profile political clients such as Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
Christie, who once supported and advised Trump, has ramped up his criticism against the ex-president since the former New Jersey governor launched his 2024 campaign earlier this year. FEC filings show Christie’s super PAC, Tell It Like It Is, raised nearly $6 million since June.
