New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver has died at the age of 71 after she was hospitalized on Monday for an undisclosed medical condition.

Oliver’s death comes as Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) is out of the country on a vacation in Italy, and Senate President Nicholas Scutari, a Democrat, has taken over as acting governor. Murphy is not expected to return to New Jersey until Aug. 13. Oliver’s cause of death has not been reported.

Oliver’s death was confirmed in a statement from Murphy on Tuesday.

“Tammy and I, and our children, are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend, colleague, and partner in government,” Murphy posted to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “We ask that you all keep the Oliver family and all those who loved her in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
