Paul Reubens dead: Pee-wee Herman actor dies of cancer at 70

Paul Reubens, the comedian and actor best known for his role as Pee-wee Herman in the 1980s, has died at the age of 70 from cancer.
His family released a statement about his death on social media.

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” a statement posted on his Facebook said.
In their statement, they revealed that he “fought cancer for years.”
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

Reubens got his start in the 1970s when he joined the Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy team The Groundlings. His character Pee-wee Herman started from one of his improvisational performances and made its debut on television in the show The Dating Game and later in his show Pee-wee’s Playhouse. He appeared in numerous movies, including Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
