Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at an event organized by a shadowy Democratic network ahead of the group’s annual confab of influential liberal political donors.

Harris began the fall meeting of the Democracy Alliance last week by thanking some 150 organizers at the AFL-CIO headquarters “for their work to protect and defend democracy across our country over the last year,” according to a White House official. The event did not appear on Harris’s public schedule.

Harris’s appearance at the “Powering Up for Democracy” meeting was shared by Call Center Workers United on social media. Hollywood actress Jane Fonda was in attendance and also spoke.

Co-founded by billionaire George Soros and late Progressive Insurance Chairman Peter Lewis, the Democracy Alliance has guided liberal donors to give lavishly to groups that obscure their funding from the public. The coalition of influential liberal political donors gathers twice annually to lay out their agenda.

One of those groups, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, has directed tens of millions of dollars to left-wing causes at the state and federal levels, including voting and redistricting efforts and a slew of successful ballot measures. The Sixteen Thirty Fund is a member of Arabella Advisors’s anonymous billion-dollar dark money network.

The summit hosted newly elected Democratic House leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), along with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), according to Puck News.

Federal records show that the Communications Workers of America, the union representing Call Center Workers United, has lobbied the Biden White House on broadband access, federal procurement, antitrust, worker classification, and more. Expanding broadband access has been a top issue for Harris, who has called on service providers to increase affordable options and touted the administration’s subsidy programs at events nationwide.

CWA has also lobbied the White House on issues “regarding wage theft and misclassification of workers” related to Maximus, a federal contractor that handles calls for Medicare and Affordable Care Act healthcare plans, filings assembled by OpenSecrets show. Staff organized by CWA in Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Virginia recently walked off the job, demanding better pay and working conditions.

At least one organizer was in attendance. A committee member from Bogalusa, Louisiana, received a standing ovation from Harris and others after speaking about the wage fight, according to the union.

Harris has addressed the gathering before. She spoke virtually at the Democracy Alliance annual donor summit last year. In 2017, Harris, then a California senator, introduced Soros in prerecorded remarks, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
