Voters consider China a greater threat than Russia to the United States, according to a new survey.
The Pew Research Center found 50% of respondents named China the greatest economic and security threat to the U.S., while 17% said Russia remains the biggest threat. The survey, with its open-ended question, was released on Thursday.

The other nations that respondents said all fell below 5 percentage points. Two percent said North Korea was the greatest threat, and the same percentage described the U.S. as a major threat to itself. Another 4% said no country threatened the U.S.
No other country rose above 1%, while 24% of respondents chose not to answer the open-ended question, which Pew noted was not surprising.
The survey comes at a time when voters are increasingly viewing China and its international influence more negatively than in past years. China tied with Russia as the biggest threat to the U.S. in 2019 after placing second in 2014 and third in 2007. In 2014, Russia was seen as the greatest threat among Americans, and in 2007, it was Iran.

A global Pew survey, also released on Thursday, showed 67% of respondents from 24 nations held an unfavorable attitude toward China. That number includes 83% of voters who have a negative opinion of the communist nation, a high ranking bested by only Australia and Japan, both of which came in at 87%.
Pew conducted the survey from May 30 to June 4 among 10,329 U.S. voters.
