CNN anchors were seen having a meltdown over how Hunter Biden’s federal plea deal fell apart on Wednesday, asking how there could be “such a big miscommunication?”
The scramble took place as U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika said she was not ready to accept a so-called “sweetheart” plea deal after the prosecution revealed the investigation into President Joe Biden‘s son is continuing.

“I cannot even begin to explain how the Justice Department walks into that courtroom without knowing exactly what the scope of immunity or coverage is for Hunter Biden, and equally, I cannot even begin to understand how Hunter Biden’s lawyers walk him into that courthouse without knowing exactly what the constraints, what the limitations of that deal are!” said Elie Honig, a senior legal analyst for the network.

Biden’s plea bargain with U.S. Attorney David Weiss fell apart after Noreika pressed both parties during a hearing about the prospect of the president’s son facing future charges, including failing to register as a foreign agent. Noreika raised the hypothetical prospect of a Foreign Agents Registration Act violation as the Department of Justice faces scrutiny for declining to enforce the act against the younger Biden.
“I don’t really understand the scope” of the deal’s immunity provisions, Noreika said at one point, making note of Hunter Biden’s foreign business endeavors with Ukrainian and Chinese energy companies.
Noreika later brought up the FARA question, to which an assistant U.S. attorney for Weiss indicated that the department would not be precluded from charging the younger Biden with a FARA violation.
Noreika was an appointee of former President Donald Trump. She had bipartisan support for her appointment and the support of both Democratic home-state senators.

Reacting to the deal falling apart, Karl Rove said he “cannot imagine a worse situation” for Joe Biden.
“This is the absolute worst outcome for the Biden White House. The plea deal, which they have been sort of suggesting that this was going to bring it all to conclusion, has blown up,” Rove said. “It’s going to make people, more people, look at it and say it was a special deal cut for the son of the president of the United States, and, particularly, the overreach of his attorneys asking for broad immunity on future potential charges is going to be a sticking point as well.”
