Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) has issued a response to Democratic lawmakers who left a hearing on Wednesday when she tried to argue against gender transition surgeries for children.
The walkout from Democrats took place when Cammack tried to show a video explaining what the surgeries look like. Cammack said she believed the walkout happened because the video “proves what we’ve been saying all along.”

“This is, I want to say, almost akin to a Frankenstein experiment on children,” Cammack said. “There is no consent that you can give as an adolescent to change your anatomy — particularly when, in this video, the surgeon himself admits that these kids have, in many cases, not had their first sexual experiences, and how do they affirm what things are supposed to feel like and look like when they just don’t know.”
Cammack described gender transition surgeries for children as “a giant experiment at taxpayer expense on kids” who “are just trying to figure themselves out.”

The video Cammack showed in Congress was of an interview with Dr. Blair Peters, an expert on gender transition surgeries. In a portion of the video, Peters said, “We’ve maybe done a couple, a handful, of puberty-suppressed adolescents,” and that Oregon Health & Science University is “putting our first series together as we’re kind of … figuring out what works.”
Cammack encouraged Democratic lawmakers, and those who live in the districts that represent them, to hear both sides of the argument on gender transition surgeries for children, adding that whether one agrees with the subject or not, the public should know that “this community has no idea what the long-term implications are.”

The subject of gender transition surgeries for children has been a major focus point for many conservative lawmakers, with many speaking out against it. Several Republican states have passed legislation banning the medical procedures for children.
On Tuesday, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) introduced Senate legislation that would ban gender-affirming procedures for children across the United States. The bill, titled the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, would prohibit “genital mutilation, chemical castration, and sterilization of innocent children” by charging any physicians knowingly providing “gender-affirming care” with a Class C felony, according to a press release published by the senator’s office.
