Ohio abortion rights amendment garners support from nearly three-fifths of voters: Poll

The majority of Ohio voters expressed support for a state constitutional amendment that would guarantee abortion access, according to a new survey.
The USA Today Network/Suffolk University poll found 58% of Ohio voters backed the abortion rights amendment, while 32% opposed it, and the remaining 10% were undecided on the matter. The Monday poll comes as abortion access is expected to be a top subject in the 2024 elections in state and national races.

Under the proposed amendment to Ohio’s constitution, “Every individual has a right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions, including but not limited to decisions on contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one’s own pregnancy, miscarriage care, and abortion.”
Though the amendment would protect abortion rights in the state, abortion could still “be prohibited after fetal viability,” according to the document’s language.
About 64% of Ohio women supported the amendment’s provisions, while 50% of men said the same. Support was strongest among independent women, with 85% favoring the measure, while 69% of younger voters between 18-34 supported it.
As expected, the matter was divided along partisan lines, with 81% of Democrats in support and only 32% of Republicans in support of the measure. Additionally, 68% of independent voters favored the amendment overall, according to the poll.
Abortion rights may be on Ohio’s voting ballot next November as the approval of 700,000 signatures by pro-abortion groups for the codification of abortion rights in the state constitution is being considered. State election officials have to codify the signatures by Wednesday to decide if the measure will be added to Ohio’s 2024 ballot. Furthermore, a state court will hold a special election in August to determine how much support a ballot question needs to amend the constitution.

On the national front, abortion will be a major point of contention in the 2024 presidential election, a matter on which the Republican and Democratic parties will likely differentiate themselves from their political opponents.
The poll surveyed a sample size of 500 likely voters in Ohio from July 9-12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
