Food stamps: First monthly direct payment worth average of $181 to go out in eight days in Virginia

Those who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Virginia will begin to see their benefits loaded onto their EBT, or electronic benefit transfer, cards in eight days.

Food stamps in Virginia are distributed from the 1st through the 7th of every month, with distribution being determined by the last digit of a recipient’s case number. Because of this distribution schedule, beneficiaries will begin to see their benefits for August on Aug. 1.

Food stamp recipients with a case number that ends in 0-3 will see their benefits on Aug. 1, those with a case number ending in 4-5 will see their benefits on Aug. 4, and those with a case number ending in 6-9 will see their benefits on Aug. 7.

The average SNAP benefit per household member is $181 in Virginia, with about 9% of the state’s population, or approximately 794,600, receiving assistance paying for food via SNAP.

Benefits from the food stamp program are given on the Virginia EBT card, allowing those in the program to purchase eligible items using their benefits at stores in the commonwealth.

In Virginia, food stamps may be used for “food or food products meant to be eaten by people,” along with seeds and food-producing plants, among other things, per the state. Items that cannot be purchased using food stamps benefits include nonfood items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods.

Qualifications for food stamps in Virginia depend on household size and income. For a household of one, the maximum monthly income is $2,265, and for a household of five, the maximum monthly income is $5,412. Further information on eligibility for food stamps can be found on the state’s website.
