Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) admitted the current political situation could be compared to Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Raskin gave a pre-taped interview on Inside with Jen Psaki that aired Sunday to share how his personal circumstances around the time of January 6, 2021 affected his view of modern-day politics. In the days before the riot, Raskin’s son had died. As a result, the Maryland representative claimed he “didn’t feel fear at that point” because he “had already suffered the absolute worst thing [he] could ever imagine.”

Psaki, knowing of Raskin’s love for Shakespearean works, asked if any one play reminded him of current times.

“Well there’s a passage in The Tempest: ‘Hell is empty and all the devils are here.’ I thought about that a number of times,” Raskin said. He listed off an example of how technology can be among the “devils” or otherwise.

“Every generation has to decide how to choose. Will the 21st century be essentially of democracy and freedom and a use of all extraordinary technologies to expand human happiness and prosperity, or is it going to be the use of the technologies by bullies and autocrats and tyrants to oppress people?” Raskin said. “You can see it going and either direction.”

Raskin is up for reelection in 2024.
