Another desperately false Kamala Harris attack on Ron DeSantis

You can tell how afraid Democrats are of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by their constant need to lie about him.

Last time Vice President Kamala Harris talked about DeSantis, she falsely claimed the Florida governor had banned teaching about slavery and its aftermath in Florida schools.

BIDEN JUSTICE DEPARTMENT MUST JUSTIFY HUNTER’S SPECIAL TREATMENT

It appears Harris is now willing to admit slavery is taught in Florida schools, but she is newly claiming that DeSantis wants to teach Florida students that slavery was beneficial to black people. Here is her tweet from a speech she gave in Indiana: “In the state of Florida, they decided middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery. They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, and we will not stand for it.”

This is just completely untrue. Here is a link to the Florida history standards. It is 216 pages. Here is the one sentence Harris is using to justify her claim: “Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

Clearly the standards do not, as Harris claims, teach that enslaved people benefited from slavery. What it does teach is that some slaves were taught skilled trades which they could then use to help themselves.

As Florida’s African American History Standards Workgroup explains: “The intent of this particular benchmark clarification is to show that some slaves developed highly specialized trades from which they benefited. This is factual and well documented. Some examples include: blacksmiths like Ned Cobb, Henry Blair, Lewis Latimer, and John Henry; shoemakers like James Forten, Paul Cuffe, and Betty Washington Lewis; fishing and shipping industry workers like Jupiter Hammon, John Chavis, William Whipper, and Crispus Attucks; tailors like Elizabeth Keckley, James Thomas, and Marietta Carter; and teachers like Betsey Stockton and Booker T. Washington … Any attempt to reduce slaves to just victims of oppression, fails to recognize their strength, courage, and resiliency during a difficult time in American history.”

Other benchmarks in the 216-page document include:

Examine the development of slavery and describe the conditions for Africans during their passage to America Instruction includes the harsh conditions and their consequences on British American plantations (e.g., undernourishment, climate conditions, infant and child mortality rates of the enslaved vs. the free). Instruction includes how slave codes resulted in an enslaved person becoming property with no rights. Examine different events in which Africans resisted slavery. Instruction includes the ramifications of prejudice, racism and stereotyping on individual freedoms (e.g., the Civil Rights Cases, Black Codes, Jim Crow Laws, lynchings, Columbian Exposition of 1893).

Unfortunately Kamala Harris is not an honest person.
