Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) said former President Donald Trump’s apparent call to terminate parts of the Constitution presents a “golden opportunity” for would-be opponents in the 2024 presidential election.

Amid a string of denunciations from Republicans, Thune stressed how much he disagreed with Trump’s comments while arguing that it would become a centerpiece of the 2024 primary. His comments hinted at the Republican Senate second-in-command possibly throwing in his hat for the race.

“Of course I disagree with that. I swear an oath to uphold the Constitution, and it is a bedrock principle — it is the principle, the bedrock of our country. So I couldn’t disagree more,” Thune said, according to the Hill.

BOLTON FOR PRESIDENT? FORMER TRUMP SECURITY ADVISER MIGHT BE READY ‘TO GET IN THE RACE’

“If you’re one of these other people who’s interested [in] running this year, this is certainly an opportunity to create some contrast,” he added.

“I don’t understand what the theory might [be] behind this particular campaign strategy, but he’s going to say what he’s going to say. I don’t think anybody’s going to control that, but I do think if you’re one of the other candidates, this is a golden opportunity,” he said.

Former national security adviser John Bolton also latched on to Trump’s comments, declaring, “If the current GOP presidential candidates don’t repudiate Trump, I’m prepared to get in the race.”

On Saturday, in response to Twitter CEO Elon Musk releasing files detailing internal communications at the company about suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story, Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, “A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

He later walked back these comments, saying the media was mischaracterizing what he said.

“The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to ‘terminate’ the Constitution. This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES, just like RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, and all of their other HOAXES & SCAMS,” Trump wrote. “What I said was that when there is ‘MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION,’ as has been irrefutably proven in the 2020 Presidential Election, steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG. Only FOOLS would disagree with that and accept STOLEN ELECTIONS. MAGA!’
