Jack Smith subpoenaed Arizona Secretary of State’s Office in Jan. 6 investigation

Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office as part of his investigation into the Jan. 6 riot and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The subpoena sought information regarding two lawsuits, one filed by former President Donald Trump campaign and the other by former Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman Kelli Ward, claiming errors and fraud were responsible for the 2020 presidential election results. It was issued as recently as May, per the Arizona Republic.

The local outlet added that a spokesman for Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said Coppersmith Brockelman, the outside law firm which represents the office, “complied with the requests” for information.
While this subpoena was not previously known, Smith had previously subpoenaed local officials from several swing states for communications involving Trump. One of them arrived in Maricopa County, Arizona, where Fontes was an election official during the 2020 election, per NBC News.
Arizona and its 11 Electoral College votes played a major role in deciding the election in favor of then-nominee Joe Biden. Only 10,457 votes separated the current president from the former one in the Copper State, the narrowest margin in the nation.

During the fallout from the 2020 election, Trump and some of his allies targeted pressure points in critical battleground states, hoping to overturn his 2020 election loss. The failed endeavor came to an end when the election was certificated in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
In addition to his investigation into the Jan. 6 riot, Smith was also tasked with probing Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence. In that case, Trump was indicted last month on 37 federal felony counts.
