US Embassy in Spain among targets in string of letter bombs: Report

A letter bomb was discovered and safely defused at the United States Embassy in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday, marking the sixth explosive device to be sent to high-profile government targets in recent weeks.
The latest bomb was intercepted Thursday afternoon by the security post at the embassy, a police official said. The bomb was safely detonated in a controlled explosion and no injuries were reported.

“We are grateful to Spanish law enforcement for their assistance with this matter,” Jamie Martin, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy, told CNN.
The first bomb was addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and discovered on Nov. 24, with similar devices discovered at the Spanish defense ministry, the Ukrainian Embassy, an air force base, and a weapons manufacturer in recent weeks. Authorities have increased security measures at high-profile locations in response to the threat.
“What must be very clear is that none of these deliveries or any other violent action will change the clear and firm commitment of Spain, NATO countries, and the European Union to support Ukraine,” Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles said in a statement.
The U.S. State Department said it would continue evaluating the security situation at the embassy in Madrid, but it remains open for American Citizen Services. No suspect has been identified. However, Rafael Perez, Spain’s secretary of state for security, said the letters were likely sent from Spanish territories, according to CNN.
Ukrainian embassies and consulates across Europe are also increasing their security after the embassies and consulates received bloody packages containing real animal eyes.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko said the parcels were received at embassies in Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, and Italy, and consulates in Naples, Italy, Krakow, Poland, and the Czech city of Brno.
Authorities are investigating what the parcels mean, but they arrived on Wednesday shortly after the explosive package arrived at the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain, according to Fox News.
