Mexico reached what might be a new low in its complaints about America’s response to the illegal immigration crisis at our enjoined borders. Not only does the Mexican government refuse to do anything meaningful about it, but it gets angry at anyone who does.

That includes Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who recently signed a bill with various measures aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from using identification documents or taking jobs from lawful U.S. residents. According to a statement from Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s administration, this “anti-immigrant law” is “inspired by xenophobic and white nationalist sentiments.”

Mexicans without even a legal right to be in America will have their “human rights” violated by the law due to “discrimination,” Mexico absurdly claims. The government also predicts “hate crimes” against immigrants without any evidence whatsoever.

While Mexican officials speculate about crimes against innocent people, dangerous people are illegally crossing America’s southern border and committing them. Mexico’s mismanagement of its own border is also killing Americans by allowing opioid trafficking. As Lopez Obrador allows record numbers of immigrants to make the dangerous journey to the U.S., many of his own people perish.

The offense that officials focus on, however, is DeSantis causing “feelings of intimidation and fear in the migrant community.” That’s right. People are dying, and they want us to worry about feelings.

To be clear, the blame for the border crisis falls on President Joe Biden as much as on Mexico. But when your country is so overrun with poverty and drug cartels that analysts are sincerely debating whether it is a failed state, it looks beyond foolish to fuss over another country’s attempt to clean up your mess. Accusing Americans of racism and xenophobia for wanting to defend their state’s sovereignty is disgraceful and merits an apology.

Unfortunately, looking foolish appears to be Lopez Obrador’s leadership style. He denies that the massive influx of fentanyl is even happening as U.S. law enforcement reports prove him wrong. His administration has embraced dysfunctionality to such an extent that it argues against the very purposes of immigration law. “Criminalization is not the way to solve the issue of undocumented immigration,” the anti-DeSantis statement reads.

What is the solution, then? Mexican leaders won’t say because they’re not interested in helping, only shooting down American proposals and causing historically low cooperation between the two nations. The people enabling this crisis do not respect us. The sooner we have a strong president who puts them on the defensive about it, the better.
