Secret Service discovery of ‘unknown item’ prompts closures around White House

Local roads in the nation’s capitol were briefly shut down near the White House late Sunday evening, after federal officials said Uniformed Officers located an “unknown item.”

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Gugliemi said “precautionary closures” were taken following the discovery.

The impacted area was identified as 18th St and Pennsylvania Ave., with Secret Service units closing roads leading to the White House.

The item in question was later deemed “non-hazardous,” though D.C. Emergency Medical Service officials are still investigating, according to spokesman Guglielmi.
