CNN cuts multiple correspondents, guts HLN live programming

Correspondents and production staff were among those let go Thursday in CNN’s latest string of cuts.
Chris Cillizza, Alison Kosik, Martin Savidge, Alex Field, and Mary Ann Fox were cut, according to Variety. The network also gutted its sister network HLN, eliminating the live programming of what was once known as CNN’s Headline News.

The cuts follow Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s reported commitment to investors that $3 billion in costs would be eliminated after the company acquired the assets of WarnerMedia from AT&T.
On Wednesday, CNN CEO Chris Licht sent an all-staff memo to employees announcing the impending layoffs and compared the move to a “gut punch.”

Licht took over the helm of CNN in May and promised changes in an attempt to cut costs and resurrect the network’s poor ratings. Those changes have since included Brian Stelter’s show Reliable Sources being canceled, Don Lemon being reassigned following his prime-time show being canceled, and Jake Tapper’s prime-time show also being canceled.
CNN also chose to end its streaming service CNN+ one month after its launch as it struggled to find an audience.
