Former President Donald Trump is decrying the indictments against him as “fake” and claiming he would have never been charged with the alleged crimes if he were losing to President Joe Biden in polls for the 2024 presidential election.
The former president made the accusation and claimed he was “indicted for you” in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday morning.

“IF I WASN’T RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, OR IF I WAS LOSING BADLY IN THE POLLS (I AM WINNING BY RECORD NUMBERS, & AGAINST BIDEN ALSO!), I WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN FAKE INDICTED. LIKEWISE, IF THE VERY CORRUPT DEMOCRATS TRULY WANTED TO RUN AGAINST ME, I WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN INDICTED. IT IS ALL A BADGE OF HONOR & COURAGE. I AM BEING INDICTED FOR YOU!!!” Trump said.
In a post on Truth Social earlier Wednesday morning, Trump also claimed the only reason he was indicted, which he called “election interference,” was that “Democrats don’t want to run against me.”
“Please remember that the only reason I was indicted (ELECTION INTERFERENCE) is because the Democrats don’t want to run against me. They weaponized the DOJ & FBI. I am beating Crooked Joe Biden in virtually every poll, and easily beat him in the last election, but the election was RIGGED. In 2016 it was the same thing, spewed from the mouths of the same failed pundits and losers. They said I couldn’t beat Hillary — How did that work out??? Doug Schoen of FoxNews should get a new playbook!” Trump said.
Trump, the first former or current president to be indicted, has been indicted twice in 2023. His first indictment was in Manhattan in March, in which he was charged with allegedly falsifying business records in relation to hush money payments made before the 2016 presidential campaign. The former president’s second indictment came earlier this month, when he was federally charged in relation to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. Trump pleaded not guilty in both cases.
The former president is also under investigation by special counsel Jack Smith for his alleged role in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and by a grand jury in Georgia for his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the Peach State.
Recent polls have shown a mixed bag for Trump in a rematch against Biden, with both leading the other in different polls. The RealClearPolitics polling average shows Trump with a razor-thin edge over Biden, 43.8%-43.6%, in national polls. Of the eight polls in the average, Trump leads in three, Biden leads in four, and one shows the two men tied.
