Biden’s border crisis endangers skies as air marshals sent south

If you live in a community near the southern border, the Biden border crisis has been disrupting your life for almost two years now. If you live in a Democratic-controlled sanctuary city such as New York or Washington, D.C., the flood of immigrants has been hitting your community for a few months now, ever since Republican governors started taking up your leaders on their promises and busing border-crossers to your city.
Now everyone who flies a plane will also be put in danger, thanks to the Biden border crisis.

As part of its preparation for the even larger flood of immigrants expected to hit the border when Title 42 expires next month, the Biden administration has essentially dismantled the entire federal air marshal system, redeploying the agents to the southern border to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection process illegal immigrants into the country faster.
“The Federal Air Marshal Service is understaffed and covering the fewest number of flights since before September 11, 2001,” the National Association of Police Organizations said in response to President Joe Biden’s redeployment. “We strongly question the decision by the Department of Homeland Security to divert much-needed aviation security to the southern border especially as we enter the busiest travel season of the year, particularly as a Federal emergency has not been declared at the border.”
The Air Marshal National Council highlighted that last point, the questionable legality of Biden’s air marshal redeployment, in its own letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. According to the council’s president, David Londo, at least 150 air marshals have been ordered to report to the southern border for immigration processing duties starting Dec. 7. This redeployment will leave 99% of all commercial flights without an air marshal.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there have been 2,178 reports of unruly passengers so far this year, as well as 767 investigations initiated and 517 enforcement actions taken. “Your policy of forcing [air marshals] to deploy to the southern border is extremely concerning given the time of year and the recent incidents of violence flagged on aircraft,” Londo wrote to Mayorkas.
If, God forbid, absolutely anything should happen on any flight this holiday season, Biden is now 100% to blame.
It doesn’t have to be this way. The federal government doesn’t need to illegally redeploy federal law enforcement agents from across the country to help process illegal immigrants into the country faster. Instead of enabling the abuse of our nation’s asylum system, Biden could re-implement the solution that solved the 2019 border crisis: the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
Virtually every immigrant currently flocking to the southern border is an economic immigrant, making the dangerous journey across gang-infested Mexico to earn a better living in the United States. This may be admirable, but poverty is not a legal basis for asylum. Most of the immigrants will lose their asylum claims. But they keep coming anyway because they know that Biden will let them in while their cases are pending. They know Biden will let them stay for years as their asylum claims are heard, and they know Biden will make no effort to deport them after they lose their cases.
By denying immigrants entry into the U.S., the Remain in Mexico policy removed the incentive to make the journey except for those few with meritorious asylum claims.
If you don’t let them in, they’ll stop coming. Until Biden realizes this, he is going to have to redeploy more than just the air marshals to manage the resulting border crisis.
