McCarthy says he supports resolution to expunge Trump impeachments

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he supports two resolutions introduced by members of his conference that would “expunge” the two impeachments of former President Donald Trump.
The resolutions were introduced by House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Thursday. Greene’s resolution would expunge the House vote to impeach Trump in 2019, which charged him with obstruction of justice and abuse of power over a phone call in which he pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy to investigate then-candidate Joe Biden.

The Stefanik resolution would remove Trump’s second impeachment from 2021 for his actions in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
“I support that,” McCarthy said when asked about the resolutions. “We’ll see; it has to go through committee. I voted against both impeachments. The second impeachment had no due process.”
McCarthy said he does not believe that expunging Trump’s second impeachment would be “whitewashing” the storming of the Capitol.

His reasoning for supporting the expungement is because, he said, the first one was not based on “true facts,” and the second one had “no due process.”
Two Republicans who voted for the second impeachment, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) and Rep. David Valadao (R-CA), are still in the House. It is unclear whether they would support a resolution to expunge their own votes.
