Republicans still like Trump, but they want to nominate Ron DeSantis in 2024

The Marquette University Law School poll was in the field nationwide last week to gauge post-election sentiment. Its results contain an important message for Donald Trump: A lot of Republicans are done with this relationship and ready to move on.
First, there’s the question about a head-to-head Republican primary. Among registered voters who identify as Republican, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) beats the former president in such a contest 60% to 40%. Among independent registered voters, DeSantis leads 65% to 35%.

Another important result: Among all registered voters, DeSantis would start out tied with Joe Biden at 42%. Trump, on the other hand, trails the hugely unpopular incumbent by double digits, 44% to 34%. That’s because Trump’s net favorable ratings, at negative 36 points, are significantly worse than Biden’s negative 6-point rating. Trump’s rating is worse than those of Vice President Kamala Harris (negative 16), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) (negative 32), and former Vice President Mike Pence (negative 22).
Republicans obviously know Trump, and they still like Trump. He has a 67% to 32% favorable/unfavorable rating among his own partisans.
But that doesn’t mean they want to renominate him. They are ready to get behind someone else for president. And as someone with universal name recognition, what could he possibly do at this point to change their minds?
This is just one poll, but expect to see a lot more results like this one as other states are polled.
