As the United States officially celebrates the third annual Juneteenth holiday on Monday, support for the Black Lives Matter movement dropped considerably among Americans from its peak in 2020, according to a new poll.

About 51% of adults said they support the cause of BLM, according to the Pew Research Center survey from last week, but that number is at an all-time low since Pew started asking the question in 2017, Just the News reported. In June 2020, during the George Floyd protests, support for the activist organization sat at 67%.

Forty-six percent of respondents said they are opposed to the BLM movement, which rose from 31% just three years ago. Furthermore, 61% said race relations have not improved since then.

President Joe Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021, a year after Floyd’s death. Juneteenth — when the last remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas, discovered they were free on June 19, 1865, after the end of the Civil War — was celebrated by the black American community for years.

Most people remain pessimistic about racism in the future despite the nation’s increased focus on the matter in the last three years. The latest survey showed that 57% believe racial activism will not lead or has not led to meaningful change for black people.

The poll was conducted April 10-16 with 5,073 U.S. adults and a 1.7 percentage point margin of error.

Opposition to BLM grew in the last three years due to the organization’s scrutiny of its members and handling of donations.
