Pop singer and actor Demi Lovato said she became exhausted by having to explain her use of the pronouns “they/them” and has decided to go back to also using “she/her.”

“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,” Lovato reportedly told GQ Spain. “It was absolutely exhausting.”

“I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word,” she added.

The Disney Camp Rock star said she made the decision in August 2022 after she announced that she identified as nonbinary in May 2021.

Lovato, 30, shared that she has found herself feeling “more feminine” but still wishes for gender-neutral spaces.

“I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it,” the “Cool for the Summer” singer explained. “Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender.”

“You only have two options, male and female,” she added. “And I feel like none of that makes sense to me.”

Lovato previously explained that pronoun use had been a learning experience for her.

“I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect,” Lovato said in a podcast interview in August 2022. “Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect.”
