The Washington, D.C., Catholic church frequented by President Joe Biden will celebrate a gay Pride Mass on Wednesday evening, and a group of conservative Catholics are planning to pray the rosary outside the church in protest.

The pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown, which counts Biden among its congregants, defended the decision to have the Mass, saying it was not celebrating Pride in terms of vanity.

“This celebration is an expression of our parish’s mission statement TO ACCOMPANY ONE ANOTHER IN CHRIST, CELEBRATE GOD’S LOVE, AND TRANSFORM LIVES,” the Rev. Kevin Gillespie said of the liturgical celebration. “Our celebration of Pride is not celebrating personal vanity, but the human dignity of a group of people who have been for too long the objects of violence, bullying and harassment. Our parish reaches out to LGBTQIA+ people as it reaches out to all Catholics in our area.”

The Georgetown parish is hosting the Mass despite the fact that Catholic teaching holds that homosexual activity is a “grave depravity” and is “intrinsically disordered.” The Catholic Church also teaches that “pride” is one of the seven capital sins, which “engender other sins,” according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

A group of conservative Catholics has organized a rally outside the church to pray the rosary during the Pride Mass. The group said it plans to pray “in reparation for Catholic masses being held to honor and celebrate LGBTQ Catholics.”

“The Catholic Church teaches that God endowed all people with dignity and they should be treated with compassion and respect,” a flyer for the rally said. “But the Church does not celebrate sin, most especially at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.”

The Pride Mass at the president’s Washington parish comes days after Biden hosted a Pride celebration at the White House. The event drew criticism for prominently displaying the Pride flag on the south portico of the presidential mansion. The White House was also forced to condemn a transgender influencer who was seen topless at the event.

The Archdiocese of Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
