Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rebuked former President Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents before his arraignment in Florida on Tuesday.

“Trump had classified docs when he shouldn’t have had them, and when given the opportunity to return them, he chose not to do that for whatever reason,” Pompeo said on Fox News.

Pompeo said he handled thousands of classified documents during his political career, from his time in Congress to being the director of the CIA and then secretary of state. Pompeo said he supposes “we can all make mistakes,” but when the documents are identified, they must be turned in.

“That’s inconsistent with protecting America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines,” Pompeo said. “If the allegations are true — some of these were pretty serious, important documents, so that’s wrong.”

Pompeo expressed his sentiments regarding the historic federal charges against Trump, noting there are “lots of indications” that the allegations against the former president are true.

Other former Trump aides have spoken against him as well, with former Attorney General William Barr calling the 37-count federal indictment of the former president “very, very damning” during a Fox interview Sunday morning.

The 2024 front-runner was indicted last week by the Department of Justice for retaining classified national defense information under the Espionage Act. Several other charges include conspiracy to obstruct justice, making false statements, and concealing a document in a federal investigation. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges ahead of an expected speech Tuesday evening in Bedminster, New Jersey.
