CalFresh is a California food benefits program, previously known as the Food Stamp Program, and is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, on a federal level.

CalFresh is the Golden State’s biggest food program to assist low-income people and families with monthly payments for groceries through an Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT, system, which acts as a debit card.

Eligible households that qualify for CalFresh will receive benefits added to their card each month. After completing registration requirements, which can be found on the Department of Social Services section of the California government website, those eligible will receive CalFresh benefits within 30 days.

Expedited service is available if the recipient is high-risk. An applicant could see CalFresh benefits within three days if the applicant earns less than $150 in the month applicated and if the applicant has less than $100 in cash. Those seeking emergency services can receive the benefits no later than the third calendar day after applying, and Saturday and Sunday count as one day.

CalFresh can be used to purchase a wide variety of foods, such as bread, fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, seeds, and more. Restrictions include heated foods along with alcohol, tobacco products, and pet food.

The amount households will receive depends on factors such as income, family size, and additional expenses. According to the California government, a majority of households get over $200 every month in CalFresh benefits.
