In only two days, participants of a guaranteed income program in Los Angeles County will receive their next payment of $1,000.

The program, titled Breathe, issues payments to 1,000 participants every month, with recipients getting these monthly payments for approximately three years. Recipients receive these payments on the 15th of each month, meaning the next payment will be issued on Thursday, Los Angeles County’s Strength Based Community Change agency told the Washington Examiner.

The program was launched by Los Angeles County with the intent to allow its residents to “breathe” easier knowing they are more financially secure. The 1,000 recipients were randomly selected from a pool of eligible applicants.

Recipients in this program do not need to have a bank account to receive these monthly payments because these payments are distributed through debit cards.

Applications for this program opened on March 31, 2022, and closed on April 13, 2022. Payments started being disbursed in June 2022 and will conclude in August 2025.

A participant in the program told the Washington Examiner about how the extra $1,000 has “made things a lot easier.” She was alerted to the program by a friend.

“I just thought I would look it over, and I ended up filling up the first part of the form and then getting promoted to the next part, to the next part, and next thing I knew, I was done,” she said. “And since it was done so quickly, I have to say that for me, it was relatively painless — or I wouldn’t have continued through it.”

An expansion of this program will add 200 more recipients, all of whom will be former foster children who, if selected, will receive monthly $1,000 payments for two years. The application window for this expansion opens on June 20 and will close on July 3.
