2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to receive communications involving top officials within the Justice Department regarding the federal indictment of former President Donald Trump.

Ramaswamy, a Republican, said on Monday he requested the direct and indirect communications between President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland to special counsel Jack Smith to “get to the bottom” of what was discussed as Smith investigated the former president’s alleged mishandling of classified documents.

“This is an affront to every American — to me, this isn’t even about Donald Trump. This is about the future of equal justice in America,” Ramaswamy said in a video posted to Twitter. “What we have right now are two tiers of justice: one for Biden and one for Trump.”

“We can’t continue to have these two tiers of justice that vary depending on your political beliefs in this country,” Ramaswamy said, saying the 49-page indictment “reeks” of politicization.

The Justice Department unveiled a 49-page indictment on Friday that indicts Trump on 37 counts for charges related to alleged obstruction and mishandling of classified documents. Walt Nauta, an aide to the former president, was indicted alongside Trump.

Trump is set to appear in court on Tuesday at 3 p.m. EDT at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Ramaswamy said he will hold a press conference outside the courthouse at 10:30 a.m. ahead of Trump’s arrival.

If elected president, Ramaswamy said he would pardon Trump, a statement that fellow candidate Asa Hutchinson said was “wrong.” The entrepreneur also blasted the media earlier on Monday for doing the U.S. government’s “bidding” instead of holding the government accountable.

Ramaswamy said he is “skeptical” about what the government is saying about the investigation and will make another “major announcement” at the conference on Tuesday.

“We’ll see what we learn,” Ramaswamy said of his FOIA request. “I will not stop on that process, using this legal means, and get to the bottom of it.”

“We’re standing for all Americans to preserve liberty, equality, and justice for all in the face of this ever-expansive and increasingly corrupt federal administrative police state,” Ramaswamy added. “Real leadership doesn’t start in the future; it starts today.”
