The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program offers aid to low-income families to help pay for heating and cooling costs.

Various states offer benefits for cooling homes during the hot summer months, with states offering as much as $12,300. Here is a look at the maximum cooling benefit offered by states and the District of Columbia.

Applications for cooling assistance are open at different times of the year for different states, but applications for cooling assistance are open in 14 states year-round.

Cooling assistance is not available in 22 states, many of which are in the northern part of the United States.

LIHEAP payments can be used to purchase, install, or repair air conditioning units, along with heat pumps. In addition, the payments can be used to pay for electric bills or security deposits for operating cooling equipment.
