The Soros family’s impact on politics is about to get worse

George Soros is no longer in charge of his $25 billion empire. The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that he is “handing control” of the Open Society Foundations to his son, Alexander.

What does this mean? It means the Soros family’s impact on politics is about to get even worse. We know this because Alexander Soros made it clear that while he and his father “think alike,” he also describes himself as “more political.” In practice, the younger Soros said he wants to expand their political activity into debates over voting, abortion, and “gender equity.”

CONGRESS CAN DO MORE TO PREVENT MEGAFIRES

This may seem mainstream enough. But digging a bit deeper into Alexander Soros’s background and advocacy reveals he is not only more political than his father but also more radical.

In 2015, he launched the “Bend the Arc Jewish Action PAC,” which is “devoted solely to promoting progressive stances on domestic issues in the United States.” I should note that, substantively, the organization has nothing to do with Judaism, of course. The reason Soros’s involvement with Bend the Arc is relevant, though, is that a look at the website makes it clear it is not just a “liberal” group. “Far-left” is a much better description.

The front page of Bend the Arc’s website reads: “Solidarity across race, faith, class, and gender is the only way to build power and dismantle the systems of oppression that harm and endanger our communities. We have to do it together. None of us will be free until all of us are free.”

It goes on, explaining, “We’re investing in systems that keep our communities safe and divesting from systems that uphold white supremacy.” Under a subheading titled “Build a new America,” it writes, “We’re fighting for the joyful future we deserve: one where Black liberation is realized and where all of us are safe and thriving, no matter what we look like or where we come from.”

The website also features a video series titled “Your Safety is My Safety,” which “highlights our visions of community safety beyond the limits of our fears.” This idea seems to be derived from an often-used liberal phrase, “Safety through solidarity.” It has been used as justification for a range of imprudent public safety policies — including arguing against armed guards at synagogues.

So this is the organization that Alexander Soros, the new leader of George Soros’s multibillion-dollar foundation, has spent much of his time working on over the past few years. It is not only explicit about its endorsement of the worst elements of liberal politics but also about its view of the U.S. as a place with fundamentally corrupt institutions. Now, someone who fully understands and identifies with its mission is in charge of one of the largest nonprofit organizations on Earth.

If you thought George Soros had a negative influence on politics, just wait until Alex takes charge.
