DeSantis is smart to highlight that Trump could only serve one term

It’s the fact that everyone knows, but seemingly only a few people have mentioned so far: if elected president in 2024, Donald Trump can only serve one term.
It is significant because it would affect what Trump could accomplish during his second term. It would derail political strategies and objectives as all Trump’s political opponents would have to do is stall and wait things out — like what they did from 2016 to 2020.

As mentioned above, Trump’s term limitation hasn’t received the attention it deserves — until Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) brought it up at a campaign stop on Wednesday. Being able to serve two terms is a benefit that DeSantis, or any other GOP presidential candidate, can give to the country that Donald Trump cannot.
“You really need a very disciplined energetic presence willing to spit nails and fight the needed battles every single day for eight years … It really requires two terms to be able to finish the job,” DeSantis said. It was a blatant dig at Trump and a smart one at that.
Granted, I don’t completely agree with DeSantis here. I do not like the message that one candidate needs eight years to “finish the job.” Presidential terms are four years. The message might make more sense if this were maybe 2027, and DeSantis was president for two years already. But to say it before he even sets foot inside the White House, before he even leads any GOP Primary poll, is a pretty silly message.
Nevertheless, the potential to serve two consecutive terms is pretty significant and something DeSantis, and probably anyone running for the GOP nomination, should start emphasizing.
The emphasis shouldn’t be on needing eight years. It should be about all the positives that would benefit the country by having eight consecutive years of a Republican presidency. Candidates should emphasize the impact former President Barack Obama had on shaping the country as a result of his two terms, and that is why we need a Republican to be in office for that amount of time.

Ultimately though, DeSantis is correct. Electing Trump would mean electing a lame-duck president. That doesn’t necessarily mean it shouldn’t happen, as it did before with former President Grover Cleveland. However, it is better for a president to serve two consecutive terms instead of two individual ones.
