Biden to host second White House democracy summit in spring 2023

The White House announced Tuesday that it will host a second democracy summit in late March 2023 in an effort to accelerate “concrete action toward democratic resilience and renewal.”
Biden held a similar democracy summit in December 2021, and White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday that the U.S. would be joined by Costa Rica, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Zambia in co-hosting the 2023 affair.

“Democracy remains the best tool humankind has to unleash our collective potential and deliver security and prosperity for all. That’s why he’s made strengthening democracy a cornerstone of both his domestic and international agendas,” she stated during a gaggle on Air Force One. “The summit will also assemble world leaders in a virtual plenary format, followed by in-person gatherings in each co-host country, with representatives from government, civil society, and the private sector.”
“Together, we will showcase progress made by world leaders on commitments made at the first Summit of Democracy held in December 2021, and it will reaffirm the vitality of the democratic model and collective action to meet the unprecedented challenge of our time,” Jean-Pierre concluded.
The Biden administration drew some fire while planning the 2021 summit for not inviting several countries. White House officials did not answer questions Tuesday about which countries would make the cut in 2023.
