The number of people who believe humans are the cause of climate change hasn’t changed since 2017.
An Ipsos poll found that 49% of the public believes humans mostly cause climate change, which was the same result when Americans were polled in 2017 and 2018. Yet around that same time, U.S. government researchers across 13 federal agencies issued the Climate Science Special Report, which purported it is “extremely likely” that humans are the “dominant cause” of climate change.

Meanwhile, in the most recent poll, some 27% blamed natural patterns for changes in the climate, and 7% reported their belief that it’s not happening at all. Almost half of the Republican respondents, 46%, said the cause was natural patterns, but only 13% of Democratic respondents gave the same reason.
A majority of 54% remain with the belief that it’s not too late to stop climate change, with 60% of Democratic respondents and 52% of Republican respondents sharing that same hope. At the same time, 62% of all respondents who agreed climate change is caused by humans aren’t willing to change any of their behaviors to lessen their individual impacts.
Some 30% of Democrats reported they are most likely to begin using public transportation within the next year, while only 14% of Republicans committed to doing the same. Democrats went even further, with 38% of them reporting they would trade in their car for an electric vehicle, but 10% of Republicans would do the same. Over a quarter of Republicans were willing to walk or bike to close locations instead of driving more often but could not compare to the 45% of Democrats who reported the same willingness.
