Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) found himself embroiled in an online feud with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) over Pride apparel.
It began Monday when Newsom called out Target CEO Brian Cornell for hiding and in some cases removing parts of the chain’s Pride collection ahead of June, which is celebrated as Pride Month by members of the LGBT community. Newsom accused Cornell of “selling out” the community.

“CEO of Target Brian Cornell selling out the LGBTQ+ community to extremists is a real profile in courage. This isn’t just a couple stores in the South. There is a systematic attack on the gay community happening across the country,” Newsom tweeted. “Wake up America. This doesn’t stop here. You’re black? You’re Asian? You’re Jewish? You’re a woman? You’re next.”

On Tuesday, Greene issued a response, despite not having previously commented on the retailer’s collection.
“No one is attacking the gay community Gavin. They don’t want their children forcefully exposed to the radical side of pride with ‘tuck it’ and ‘binding’ children’s clothes and messaging while simply shopping at Target,” Greene wrote back. “We don’t support your California child genital mutilation industry. As a matter of fact, I want to end it.”
The governor replied to Greeene’s tweet on Wednesday.

“Are you the space laser person?” Newsom tweeted, referring to a 2018 post by Greene speculating that laser beams or some kind of concentrated energy could have caused an outbreak of wildfires in California.
Target’s current Pride collection features over 2,000 items, including clothing, lights, books, and furnishings. The retailer has issued a collection every summer since 2012.
